If the whole idea was to be able to differentiate (for newbie fans) who is in the chase and who isn't, then this seems really dumb. Of course I can't think of anything good the RTA has done, so...

The RTA is so bad because they essentially shut down all the small teams, and now their agreement with NASCAR prevents changes to the cars & schedule for a certain period of time, meaning if something doesn't work, we're stuck with it for a lot longer.

Here's what the standings would look like under the old (2011-2013) system (note: I awarded 5 bonus points for a win rather than 3, because the current points system awards 5 playoff points for a win): 1st: Kevin Harvick 2nd: Joey Logano (-5) 3rd: Martin Truex, Jr. (-14) 4th: Kyle Busch (-30) 5th: Kurt Busch (-37) 6th: Chase Elliott (-42) 7th: Ryan Blaney (-49) 8th: Clint Bowyer (-50) 9th: Brad Keselowski (-69) 10th: Kyle Larson (-76) 11th: Denny Hamlin (-92) 12th: Erik Jones (-105)

Could this be the end of RPM. It would explain why Bubba had no backup at Talladega.

Could this be the end of RPM. It would explain why Bubba had no backup at Talladega. It's definitely possible. This team has no money, they've become a back marker since the beginning of the summer, and they've torn up a lot of cars recently.

The forecast is definitely looking better than it did a few days ago. There probably won't be any track activity on Friday, but the rest of the weekend looks pretty good now.

When Jeffrey Earnhardt was announced in the #96, I seem to remember them saying he would be in "all remaining races but one." Perhaps this is that one?

What will the temperature be for this race? If I recall, it can sometimes be pretty frigid during this race.

Kyle used to not be very good at Martinsville. I think it was a result of his impatience and immaturity. Unsurprisingly, he's been very good there since the fall of 2015, when he really became one of the elite drivers every week.
Kyle Busch at Martinsville: 2005-2014: 20 starts, 1 pole, 0 wins, 8 top 5s, 9 top 10s, 487 laps led, 12.2 avg. start, 15.7 avg. finish, 1 DNF, 13 LLF 2015-2018: 6 starts, 1 pole, 2 wins, 6 top 5s, 6 top 10s, 837 laps led, 8.0 avg. start, 2.7 avg. finish, 0 DNFs, 6 LLF
This is why I'm predicting him to win tomorrow. He's been basically unstoppable there since his injury. He averages 139.5 laps led per race since then.

Clint Bowyer might impress us at Martinsville again. In the spring, he started back in 9th and didn't get to the front until lap 285. But once he got there, he led pretty much the rest of the way. This time, he starts 2nd, so he'll already be at the front.
Bowyer has always been pretty good at Martinsville. He scored 6 straight top-10s while driving for MWR, and since moving over to SHR, he hasn't finished worse than 7th. Last fall, he finished 3rd behind Kyle Busch and Truex, then he beat Kyle Busch (2nd) and Truex (4th) this spring.
