Here's a question for discussion:
How would you feel about the playoff system if Chase Elliott wins this year's championship?
It's certainly possible. He's been on a hot streak lately with 2 wins in the last 3 races, and last year, he came within 10 laps of winning both Martinsville and Phoenix in the Round of 8. Plus, Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch don't seem to have as much of an edge as they did earlier in the season, though both are still at the top, so if Elliott does make it into the final round, he stands a decent chance of beating them.
But despite his recent success, Elliott still only ranks 10th in full-season points (where Busch and Harvick have a huge lead over everyone else), and 9 other drivers have led more laps than him this year.

I would be happy for him but it would feel like 2011 when Tony got very hot at the end and tied Carl who had been very consistent during the season. Ultimately it really should be Kyle or Kevin.

I still wouldn't like the format but if he can straight up beat everyone else then he deserves it.

I think it would be interesting to see how fans react if Elliott were to win the championship, because that would produce a scenario where most people dislike the system but like the driver who benefited from it.

As a Chase Elliott fan (and not so much a fan of Kyle Busch or Kevin Harvick), I'd be thrilled, but as a racing fan, I wouldn't be too happy about it.

If Elliott won and did it by winning multiple races in the chase (he already has 2), then yeah, I wouldn't have an issue with him winning. The current chase format is geared a lot towards winning, so If he's winning races then yes.

The current chase format is geared a lot towards winning, so If he's winning races then yes. Not sure what the yes is in regards to, since it wasn't a yes or no question, but if you're implying he'd be a deserving champion, I still say no. He trails Harvick by 4 wins, 9 top 5s, 7 top 10s and 1373 laps led. He trails Busch by 3.9 spots in average finish and by 285 points (4.75 races) in the full-season standings. I like Chase a lot and really want him to succeed, but that doesn't change the fact that he wouldn't be a deserving champion unless he can close the gap on those guys. Even if Chase led every lap and won the next 4 races and Harvick & Busch crashed on the first lap of each race and finished 39th and 40th respectively, Elliott would still trail Harvick by 5 top 5s & 3 top 10s, be tied with him in wins and surpass him by only 40 laps led. He would surpass Busch by only 0.8 positions in average finish and would still trail Kyle by 49 points (nearly a full race.) I know the format's geared towards winning, but that still doesn't mean it produces the correct results. Look at the history: 2014: most points - Jeff Gordon, most wins - Brad Keselowski, champion - Kevin Harvick 2015: most points - Kevin Harvick, most wins - Joey Logano, champion - Kyle Busch 2016: most points - Kevin Harvick, most wins - Jimmie Johnson, champion - Jimmie Johnson 2017: most points - Martin Truex, Jr., most wins - Martin Truex, Jr., champion - Martin Truex, Jr. 2018 (so far): most points - Kyle Busch, most wins - Kyle Busch/Kevin Harvick, champion - ? Thus far, the only driver who's swept all 3 categories was MTJ last year. Johnson's the only other champion in this era to lead in either points or wins, and I still don't think he was a deserving champion. If the champion is anyone other than Busch or Harvick this season, they will be undeserving. But that doesn't change the fact that I will root against them at Homestead, however.

With the 8 remaining drivers, I would view 4 of them winning the title positively from my perspective as a fan and 4 negatively:
Martin Truex, Jr. ++++ Chase Elliott +++ Aric Almirola ++ Clint Bowyer + Joey Logano - Kurt Busch -- Kevin Harvick --- Kyle Busch ----
However, as a fan of racing, this metric can be changed a bit. It would be better for Harvick or Busch to win from that perspective. Here's how they stack up in full-season points:
1st: Kyle Busch (1261) 2nd: Kevin Harvick (-16, or 0.3 races) 3rd: Martin Truex, Jr. (-163, or 2.7 races) 4th: Kurt Busch/Joey Logano (-174, or 2.9 races) 6th: Clint Bowyer (-254, or 4.2 races) 10th: Chase Elliott (-285, or 4.8 races) 12th: Aric Almirola (-348, or 5.8 races)
The drivers in 7th (Keselowski) & 8th (Larson) have already been eliminated.

I picked the 3rd choice in the vote because while I think Bowyer will be a contender Sunday, I don't see him winning as I believe Kyle Busch wins Sunday. I do think Bowyer gets a top 5 though.

Still a stupid idea, but the NBC logo will probably be better than the giant, odd-looking emojis.
