And so it begins...Obaika's attempts to become an established Cup team.
I give 'em a year, tops.
Is "Backmarker" on the Discord you? I just assume so because of the Simpsons picture.

Random obscure fact: Ryan Newman finished 16th in full-season points in both 2016 and 2017, and he currently ranks 16th in full-season points once again.

It is my sad duty to announce Kasey will not be back.

That sucks. Wonder if he'll come back for a one-off or two just to say he got to go out on his own terms.

It is my sad duty to announce Kasey will not be back. It's a shame his career will end that way, but he's certainly not the first driver to have to leave the sport suddenly due to illness or injury. Knowing what we know now, I'm very happy for him that he did manage to get that win at Indianapolis last year--the last of his career. His next-to-last race was one of his best results of the season (15th at Bristol), and he was able to wrap up his career at historic Darlington.

His next-to-last race was one of his best results of the season (15th at Bristol), and he was able to wrap up his career at historic Darlington. And his Darlington scheme was a throwback to his winningest year. (And his number was a combination of the only two numbers he used for a full Cup season: 9 and 5.) [Edited in 2021 to add: Actually I guess he drove the #4 for a full season, too, but 9 minus 5 equals 4 so that works, too. He also only used it for one season, so the 95 is still the two numbers he used for multiple seasons, and in the same order, too.] I'm hoping he can come back for at least one or two races in the future, but if he doesn't, at least he'll end his career with all of his races being consecutive. I don't know of any other drivers with that many starts who can say that (although Jeff Gordon came close).

With Kahne's retirement, no Cup Series rookies from 2004 are still racing full-time in the Cup Series, and only one (Johnny Sauter) is racing full-time in any NASCAR series.
Also, if Jamie McMurray retires after this year, Kyle Busch will be the only full-time Cup driver whose rookie year was between 2003 and 2005.
However, both rookies from 2002 (Newman and Johnson), and the top two from 2001 (Harvick and Kurt), are still racing full-time, and likely will be for at least the next two years.

Sucks for Kahne, but it’s better to leave the sport intact. With 18 wins he has nothing left to prove.

Dave Rogers is back. He's taking over the #19 effective immediately.

I feel sorry for Kahne. I know he hasn't had the success we expect from him these last 5 years, but everyone deserves the opportunity to go out on their own terms. Overall, he had a decent career. People hate on drivers of his caliber quite a bit, but with 18 wins, he's tied with Geoffrey Bodine, Neil Bonnett, Harry Gant & Ryan Newman for 47th all-time. Top-50 isn't bad at all.
As for him coming back to get a final start or two, I highly doubt he would, especially not in Cup. If this ailment is preventing him from getting in a closed-cockpit car for a long race, he won't be running any Cup races anytime soon. He could maybe do a truck race or something, though. He'll still be in sprint cars.

Even though I think it's good that Kahne decided to quit after this season, I think it sucks that he wasn't able to complete his final season.
