It's still virtually the same group of top drivers--everyone in the top 21 in 2018 points, except Ricky Stenhouse, will be in the Clash, and no one below 21st will be in it. I miss the days when a 30th-place driver could score a random pole.
In 2003, 8 poles were earned by drivers outside the top 20 in points. But now, it's been nearly 5 years since a driver ranked lower than 23rd in year-end points won a pole.

I wish they'd just make it for pole winners only again.

I wish they'd just make it for pole winners only again. I agree, but even if it did, we wouldn't have any lower-ranked drivers making the race like we used to see.

Wasn't the "former 500 pole winners automatically get in" pretty much the "Danica gets included" rule?
She's gone now so I'm not sure why they still have that around.

Before Danica they had the 'former 500 winners' in and Derrike Cope hung around awkwardly for several years. It'd be cool to have just the pole winners and maybe add former Champions to add another driver or two with merit to fill the field. FOX probably wants as many names as possible in the race so NASCAR will make as many categories possible to have a minimum 20 car field.

Actually, they were...that's the fourth category listed, and that's the only way that Almirola, Bowyer, and Keselowski got in. 2018 Playoff Drivers (3) Aric Almirola, Clint Bowyer, Brad Keselowski

But ultimately I really didn’t wanna do it on my iPad so I just posted it as I saw it. It probably should be though pole winners followed by playoff drivers, 500 pole winners, and the new category 500 champions.

Early but an unsurprising prediction: Braad Keselowski wins this race

I don't know who will win. Maybe McMurray. His last "win" was also a non-points race, the All-Star Race in 2014.
