This offseason, we are going to try to bring back the historical race watching that we used to do. Essentially, we'd pick a race that's available for free online, and we'd all start watching at the same time, making comments as it goes along. This will be a 3-step process. Here are the details:
Step 1: submitting ideas. On this thread, please submit ideas for races you want to watch. They can be from any series, but please make sure they're available, in their entireties, for free online before you submit an idea. When you post the race, be sure to include 1) its name, 2) the year, 3) the track and 4) the series. I will accept ideas until October 21.
Step 2: voting. On October 22, I'll create a poll on this thread, where you can vote for each race you want to see this offseason. Voting will close on November 11.
Step 3: final schedule. On November 18, I will announce the final schedule for the races we plan to watch.
I hope this allows everyone to be included in the decision-making process. Please submit as many races as you want, as long as you've checked that they're available first! Even if you don't plan to watch but have some races you think others should see, submit those, too!

I'd love for this to become a thing again. What would be the criteria for races we watch (like how old do they have to be)? I would say anything more than 15 years old should be available. I tried to pick races that aren't necessarily classics but had something memorable about them (like a surprise winner or a good finish). So here's my suggestions, assuming they're available:
1981 Mason-Dixon 500 @ Dover 1986 Winston Western 500 @ Riverside 1987 Miller High Life 500 @ Pocono 1988 TransSouth 500 @ Darlington 1988 Checker 500 @ Phoenix 1989 Valleydale Meats 500 @ Bristol 1989 Talladega DieHard 500 @ Talladega 1990 Budweiser 500 @ Dover 1990 Atlanta Journal 500 @ Atlanta 1991 Goody's 500 @ Martinsville 1992 Food City 500 @ Bristol 1994 Tyson Holly Farms 400 @ North Wilkesboro 1995 Coca-Cola 600 @ Charlotte 1995 AC Delco 400 @ Rockingham 1995 Miller Genuine Draft 500 @ Dover 1996 Dura Lube 500 @ Phoenix 1997 Interstate Batteries 500 @ Texas 1997 Miller 500 @ Dover 1997 Pepsi 400 @ Daytona 1998 NAPA AutoCare 500 @ Martinsville 2000 NAPA 500 @ Atlanta 2001 Cracker Barrel 500 @ Atlanta 2001 MBNA Cal Ripken, Jr. 400 @ Dover 2001 Pop Secret Microwave Popcorn 400 @ Rockingham 2001 New Hampshire 300 @ New Hampshire 2002 Pop Secret Microwave Popcorn 400 @ Rockingham 2003 Sharpie 500 @ Bristol 2003 Mountain Dew Southern 500 @ Darlington 2003 Pontiac Excitement 400 @ Richmond

It doesn't matter how old the race was, as long as you want to see it again. Thanks for that great list. If you get time, can you check to make sure they're all online and remove the ones that aren't? Thanks.

1994 Food City 500, one of the most bizarre and fusterclucky Bristol races ever. Which is saying something. 10th place Dave Marcis wound up 14 laps down as several multi-car incidents took out many lead-lap cars and a pair of cautions coming out at inopportune times during a round of green flag pit stops further helped trap many multiple laps down.

1992 Hooter's 500 (STILL the greatest Cup finale ever raced) 1997 Pepsi 400 (The greatest NASCAR triumph for an Andretti not named Mario) 2002 Daytona 500 (One of the bigger upsets in Daytona history) 2003 Funai 250 (One of the best Richmond races outright, let alone Xfinity Richmond races) 2005 New England 200 (OK, I'm biased, this is the first race I ever went to, lol) 2007 Sam's Town 250 (An agonizingly slow mess of a race? Count me in!)

Thanks for all the submissions so far! Keep them coming! The last day for submissions is Sunday.
P.S. Please remember to check to make sure the races are available online for free in their entireties before you post them

Keep those suggestions coming! There are plenty of great Cup & Xfinity races that haven't been suggested yet, plus many races in other series. Please don't forget to check and make sure the race is available in its entirety for free online somewhere before you post it. Thanks!
I'm going to close the suggestion portion of this at the end of Sunday's Cup race at Kansas, FYI. Then we'll be on to the voting portion.

Question: Does it matter if the race broadcast is in English or not? There's a couple F1 races I want to suggest but the only full race broadcast available is in the native language of where the race was held.

I suspect there are some F1 races that are available in English, so try to find and post those. I'd certainly welcome F1 submissions, though!

A few CART suggestions: 1994 Michigan 2000 Fontana 1988 Pocono 1986 Michigan All saw obscene levels of attrition among top drivers, resulting in very odd finishing orders (though not so much in Pocono compared to others). Those kind of races are the funnest for me. Only problem is the latter two races were shown edited and taped.
Another NASCAR suggestion: 1984 Coors 420. One of the more controversial finishes of the era, and one of the last Cup races at Nashville.

Great suggestions all around! Glad people are interested in this. Less than 4 days to submit any remaining races you want to include in the vote!

Glad to see this thread gaining traction. Hopefully we can get a lot of people involved and make this a thing again.
