For one final ride. The primary scheme Jimmie ran from 2002 through 2005.

Every top driver eventually has a winless season, and 2018 will be the first one of those for Jimmie Johnson and/or Denny Hamlin. Hamlin still scored 6 top-3 finishes; he just couldn't quite seal the deal. Johnson, meanwhile, never seriously contended for a win all season, only finished better than 5th once, and only led 40 laps.

Even though Hendrick as a whole has been down, Johnson has been extra disappointing. Though he's been slightly better than Bowman, he's nowhere near Elliott.

The battle for 5th place should be interesting. 5 drivers are mathematically eligible to finish 5th: 5th: Chase Elliott 6th: Kurt Busch (-2) 7th: Aric Almirola (-4) 8th: Brad Keselowski (-11) 9th: Ryan Blaney (-42)
Here's where those drivers rank in season-long points: Kurt Busch: 5th Brad Keselowski: 6th Chase Elliott: 7th Ryan Blaney: T-9th Aric Almirola: 12th
The 17th spot has already been locked up. Ryan Newman holds a 67-point lead over Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. & Paul Menard, who are tied for 18th. Unless he finishes in the top 5 at Homestead, Newman will have his first full-time Cup season ever without a top-5 finish.

Unless he finishes in the top 5 at Homestead, Newman will have his first full-time Cup season ever without a top-5 finish. Even though it may not mean much, there are quite a few close point battles still taking place throughout the field, and any competitive driver still wants to beat those drivers around him. Championship Four: Kyle Busch Kevin Harvick Martin Truex Jr. Joey Logano Battle for 5th: 5. Elliott -- 6. Busch -2 7. Almirola -4 8. Keselowski -11 9. Blaney -42 Battle for 10th: 10. Larson -- 11. Hamlin -4 12. Bowyer -14 Battle to not be the last playoff driver: 13. Dillon +23 14. Johnson +21 15. Jones +11 16. Bowman -- Newman will finish 17th ("best of the rest") no matter what. (67 point gap) "Best of the rest besides Newman" 18. Stenhouse -- 19. Menard -- 20. Suarez -13 21. McMurray -16 (79 point gap) "JTG plus Byron" 22. Allmendinger -- 23. Byron -11 24. Buescher -14 (47 point gap) "Worst of the top 30 teams: FRM, #6, and RCR Affiliates" 25. Roush #6 team +69 26. Kahne/Smith +59 27. Ragan +52 28. McDowell +29 29. Dillon +12 30. Wallace -- Realistically, DiBenedetto is locked in 31st. No one below 31st is likely to change position, either.
