Hopefully Matt Kenseth can have a good run at the site of what will most likely be his final career win last fall. He was quickest in the first round of qualifying, but wasn't as good in the second round and will start 17th, matching his longtime car number.

Not only did Bubba Wallace finish in the top 10, this was his first top 20 (that's not a typo) finish on a non-plate track in the last 20 races. That #43 team has really had a rough season, so this is sure to give them a morale boost heading into the offseason.
William Byron has also had a rough stretch. He finished 8th today; his last top 15 finish was 13 races ago.
With Matt Kenseth's 7th place finish, all the teams in the top 31 in owner points have at least 1 top 10 finish this season. Up to this point, the #6 was the only team in that group that didn't have a top 10 finish.
As both of their careers wind down, this was quite possibly the last top 10 finish ever for Jamie McMurray (6th) and Matt Kenseth (7th). It was definitely good to see those two guys near the front again.

This was an exciting race, at least from what I saw (last 75 laps.) This is the first time my favorite driver in all 3 series get a shot at a championship, so hopefully Truex can bring it home next week.

Notable Takeaways from this race: -So much for my Bowyer prediction, lol -The Big 2 looks to be back (Busch and Harvick) but Truex still seems to be lagging behind a little -Denny Hamlin is still a dickbag -Logano isn't going to win the title. I'm not sure what fantasy world he's living in, but he's not beating both Busch and Harvick -The race was pretty good overall. I'm a fan so far of the new start/finish line, and I think it adds a new dynamic to Phoenix races

In other news, this was Cole Whitt's final race, as he will step away from racing to spend more time with his family. TriStar confirmed that yesterday. He earned respectable top-25 finishes in each of his final 3 starts.

Whitt has done a nice job in that 72 car part-time this year. Look at some stats:
Whitt in 2017: 4 top 20s, 21 top 30s, 9 DNFs, 3 laps led, 28.2 avg. finish, 322 points (8.9 points per race, 33rd in points) LaJoie in 2018 (36-race projection): 2 top 20s, 15 top 30s, 11 DNFs, 0 laps led, 31.4 avg. finish, 231 points (6.4 points per race, 33rd in points) Whitt in 2018 (36-race projection): 6 top 20s, 30 top 30s, 3 DNFs, 0 laps led, 26.8 avg. finish, 366 points (10.2 points per race, 29th in points)

William Byron won the Rookie of the Year Award in his series in three [four] consecutive years. That's never happened before in NASCAR's top three series [plus K&N, arguably the fourth-best], and I'm not sure if it will ever happen again. Edit: As Canadianfan pointed out, I forgot about Erik Jones (although I believe he shouldn't have been eligible for ROTY in the Truck Series in 2014).

I don't count Jones since he was the truck series "rookie" of the year despite running over half the races and being points eligible the year prior.

I really don't understand the rookie rules anymore. Why was Jones allowed to run for ROTY in Truck in 2015? Same with Reddick in Xfinity this year.

Why? Because NASCAR makes the decisions and their decisions rarely make sense.
This was a wild race. I was hoping that Harvick would be knocked out but it wasn't to be.

I was rooting for Byron to set this record all year, and I'm guessing it was either (A) because I didn't consider Jones's truck Rookie of the Year Award legitimate since the existing rules said he wasn't eligible (he drove more than 10 races the previous year while running for points), or (B) because I liked Byron (I did vote for him for Most Popular Driver in 2016 and probably 2017).
