If he wanted to come over to NASCAR, I think it would be good to start dabbling the next 2 years (assuming he'd come over after 2020 if he was going to, which would make the most sense. That's when the F1 rules change & Mercedes might not be as dominant anymore, plus he'd probably have tied Schumacher in championships and surpassed him in wins by then.)
If I were him, I'd sign with JGR/KBM. Mobil 1 was a former sponsor of his, so they could sponsor him. He could drive #44, his F1 number, which isn't currently being used in any series. I'd pair him with Rudy Fugle, who could work well with him and follow him up the ladder to Cup. Here's how I'd work the schedule:
2019: run the full F1 schedule. Run any truck races that occur on F1 off-weekends. Run any companion races to those truck events, whether they be Cup, Xfinity, K&N, ARCA, etc. 2020: run the full F1 schedule. Run any Xfinity races that occur on F1 off-weekends. Run any companion races to those Xfinity events, whether they be Cup, truck, K&N/ARCA combo series, etc. 2021: run the full Cup schedule for ROTY. Run any Xfinity/truck/K&N/ARCA/etc. companion races to get more seat time. 2022: run the full Cup schedule. Don't run any lower-series races, focus just on Cup.

I'm sure that's all it is. I'd like to see Alonso try out NASCAR in the future though. Next year could be the perfect chance for that, since Alonso's not going to be driving full-time in any series (except WEC, but those races are few and far between.) It would be cool if he ran the road courses in all 3 series, plus maybe trying to do the crown jewel races in the Cup Series like some of those guys did in the past.

Just for fun, I drew up a 20-race calendar for what he could run in 2019 if he wants a diverse schedule in different disciplines with an eye towards a potential full-time IndyCar ride in 2020:
2/17: MENCS @ Daytona 3/15: WEC @ Sebring 5/4: WEC @ Spa-Francorchamps 5/26: IndyCar @ Indianapolis 6/8: IndyCar @ Texas 6/16: WEC @ Le Mans 6/23: MENCS @ Sonoma 7/20: IndyCar @ Iowa 8/3: NXS @ Watkins Glen 8/4: MENCS @ Watkins Glen 8/10: NXS @ Mid-Ohio 8/18: IndyCar @ Pocono 8/24: IndyCar @ Gateway 9/1: WEC @ Silverstone 9/8: MENCS @ Indianapolis 9/28: NXS @ Charlotte 9/29: MENCS @ Charlotte 10/13: WEC @ Fuji 11/17: WEC @ Shanghai 12/14: WEC @ Bahrain

Apparently the Gatorade is key in the video. Sounds like it's going to be a two-way sponsorship of both Johnson & Alonso, in some capacity. Don't know if that means they'll be the primary sponsor on the 48, but they'll likely be associated with Jimmie.

Well Rick did say that in a month Jimmie’s sponsorship for 2019 would be announced and that was more than 2 weeks ago. I will say Fernando has expressed interest in the Daytona 500.

So could it be that Gatorade will sponsor Johnson for most of the races next year and also sponsor Alonso in the Daytona 500? He couldn't drive for Hendrick because they already have 4 cars, but he could drive for an affiliate like Ganassi.

Yeah, could be. But I don't see why people are hyping up JTG. I'd be very surprised if they're any better on speed than they were this year. Obviously, Preece will be an upgrade over Allmendinger so he'll run better, and Buescher will be the measuring stick for the team's improvement or decline. But it's not like they're going to be Hendrick 2.0 like SHR was for 6 years.

How much can they really learn from today's test, though? There were only 4 cars out there. If the draft is going to be more important, we won't get a good picture until there are at least 10 or so cars out there.

I really don't get why everybody is acting like the 2019 package is the end of the world. NASCAR tried what the drivers wanted (super low downforce) and the past two years the fanbase has hated it (until they 180'd after the ASR). Hell I knew right off the bat when they tested it at MIS in 2016 it wasn't the way to go. And for years, even during the beloved Gen 4 era, everybody was clamoring for the racing in Cup to be made more like the racing Trucks & IROC. Now NASCAR is actually doing that and OMG it's the worst thing ever!
They also don't seem to realize the 2019 package is just a stop-gap to mask the failure that has been the Gen 6 until the Gen 7 (and maybe new engine package) can be allowed to roll out since the RTA/charter agreements are holding major changes to the cars hostage like the track agreements have held the schedule hostage.
Truthfully, I've always been partial to racing packages that makes the ultimate goal (the lead) a hard task to keep & defend.
Not a reward that puts a driver at an obscene advantage now matter how good he or his car are.
